Judging a Jest: Humour and Censorship


Dr. Jessica Milner Davis Honorary Associate Department of English
Jessica Milner Davis is an Honorary Associate in the School of Literature, Art and Media, University of Sydney, and coordinates the Australasian Humour Studies Network. A member of Clare Hall, Cambridge, she is a Research Affiliate with Brunel University’s Centre for Comedy Studies Research, a former Visiting Scholar at Bristol, Stanford, Hofstra and Zurich Universities and a Senior Visiting Fellow at Bologna University in 2013. In 2017 she was elected Fellow of the Royal Society of New South Wales in recognition of her interdisciplinary work, and received a Lifetime Achievement Award for Humour Research from the International Society for Humor Studies in 2018. She is an editorial board member for leading humour research journals and book-series. Her own books include Farce (1978, 2003), and multi-disciplinary edited studies on aspects of humour and satire, including Satire and Politics: The Interplay of Tradition and Practice (2017), Understanding Humor in Japan (2011), and Humour in Chinese Life and Letters and Humour in Chinese Life and Culture (with Jocelyn Chey, Hong Kong UP 2013 and 2015), as well as Judges, Judging and Humour (with Sharyn Roach Anleu, 2018). She recently co-edited (with Robert Phiddian) a Special Issue of Journal of Comedy Studies (Taylor & Francis 2019) on "John Clarke, Trans-Tasman Satirist" and is currently preparing one on the pragmatics of humour in East Asian cultures.
