“Secrets of cultural heritage revealed at ANSTO”

In this lecture, Dr Bevitt will show how the use of state-of-the-art scientific techniques from the Australian Centre for Neutron Scattering has revealed the secrets of 26 objects from the Powerhouse collection. You will hear from him about using neutrons to solve mysteries of the past and uncover new ones.

Dr Joseph Bevitt Senior Instrument Scientist ANSTO
Dr Joseph Bevitt is a senior instrument scientist at ANSTO and is also the scientific coordinator for the Australian Centre for Neutron Scattering. ANSTO offers a wide range of unique nuclear-beam techniques to look at the structure and dynamics of materials from the atomic to the macroscopic scale. These powerful and versatile methods are superb probes to be used in tandem with traditional methods to extract maximum information from an object without the need for sampling or invasive procedures. Joseph Bevitt obtained his PhD in chemistry from the University of Sydney. He is a former NSW Branch President of the RACI and a Guest Research Fellow of the Jilin University Dinosaur Evolution Research Centre. When not engaged in his cultural heritage research which is his passion and hobby, he immerses himself in his other pursuits of good homemade food, travel, and Lego!
